Designed by award winning Sydney architect, James Hadaway, our house in beautiful Port Huon demonstrates the signature design concept of James’ work, the “Deck House philosophy”, where the boundaries between inside and outside become blurred with our deck house inspired design at Port Huon being a prime example.

The prime reason our house was built was to showcase James’ architecture and allow people to experience quality architecture first hand. The Deck House Design Studio was established in 2007 and focuses on sustainable well considered architecture.

Located an easy scenic 50 minute drive south of Hobart at Port Huon, the house was designed to fully capture the spectacular setting and amazing views over the lower reaches of the Huon Valley and Huon River. The house is set on approximately 12 hectares of elevated rolling pastures, so peaceful countryside sounds are ensured.

The “Deck House philosophy” resulted in a contemporary designed three bedroom luxury holiday house with numerous sustainable design elements incorporated subtly into the comfortable accommodation and is typical of James’ architecture. The Deck House Design Studio section provides further detail on the innovative design elements within the house and the architectural practice.

The greatest design feature of the house is the deck and is a signature design feature of James’ architecture, which can be opened up from the front of the house to the rear to fully engage with the environment and views. Even if the weather is not so kind the large expanses of glazing will ensure the views are not hidden. On the cold evenings the fire place will warm the house with the help of the underfloor heating system.

The layout of the house is specially designed for either two couples to enjoy allowing privacy and separate bathrooms or a family with children.

Home

The house created by the Deck House Design Studio at Port Huon is located within easy reach of Southern Tasmania’s best attractions. You can spend your days seeing what the South has to offer or relax and enjoy the peace and quite, especially at sunset. Watch the wallabies come out at dusk and enjoy a glass of wine on the deck.

What people say about the experience.

“We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Loved the view, something different on show each day. We planned to eat out, but why do that when you have fantastic accommodation and facilities. Wished we had stayed another night. We would readily recommend the Deck House to anyone.”

Anthony

“Thank you for giving us the opportunity to stay at the Deck House.  A combination of the location, outlook, your vision for the house and its realisation won the hearts and minds of our family.  You know that it's working when everyone gets to the last morning and there is a small mutiny about going home.

As I suspect happens quite a lot, Fiona and I spent perhaps as much time absorbing your architectural approach, the building products and the environmental management features as we did the view down the Huon River valley.  The folder of materials certainly helped us understand how the place is put together. We learned a lot - and can see how the architect's eye made a good plan really work well.  There is a "Tardis" aspect to the Deck House which offers much more living space than  you expect when you see it from the road, especially when you have both sets  of folding doors open and gentle breeze coming up the  hill.”

Andrew & Fiona

“The house worked wonderfully for our family and we all left extremely relaxed after our week there. I had booked the Deckhouse to provide the family with a much needed holiday, in a tranquil setting. It was a perfect location for the  family to reconnect back together. Thank you once again - a lovely holiday, due in no small part to the great accommodation.”

Fiona

“We had a fantastically relaxing time, the weather was sensational, the view incredible and the house was amazing. To wake up to that breathtaking view each morning and open up the bi-fold doors and let the whole view come inside was something special, we had two clear mornings and one lovely half mist covered morning.

You have (or should I say both have) I’m sure, done a marvelous job with the house, including the fit out and furnishings. Right down to all the kitchen utensils and even the fresh bacon and eggs and supplies for the first day, a lovely touch.”

John

Matthew

"The house at Port Huon is a great place to relax and soak in a stunning view of the Huon Valley. It's crisp design and innovative use of bi folding doors make it an utterly comfortable place. I would totally recommend it to anyone looking for a base to tour southern Tasmania or just to look at the view ! "
